Exotic Cars are losing their Bling

No its not Batman’s new Batmobile, it is actually a trend that is floating around the car world and is gaining momentum. Instead of the brilliant shine that we all have come accustomed to, the car industry, particularly the high-end auto makers, are switching to a matte or semi-gloss appearance.
For years the auto industry has strived to perfect the gloss finish on a car only to have the tables turned suddenly in only a matter of a few years. The matte finish paint job started years ago with the “Rat-Racers” of the day. It was only several years ago that tuners began bringing the finish back to life. Of course as the trend became more popular cars began showing up at Auto shows with dull finishes.

Industry experts expect to see limited runs of special matte finished vechiles throughout the entire industry in just 2 to 3 years. The only draw back they say, is that it is actually rather difficult to keep a dull finish dull. The polishing effects of washing a car will begin to repolish the surface. Fortunately paint manufacturers have been able to make the process much easier with a lot less maintanence. PPG Industries, a long time auto paint supplier says, “You would not believe how difficult it is to do a matte finish in production. Every time you take it through the car wash, the buffers are starting to buff it back up and it starts to get shiny there. It’s easy to paint, but it’s not easy to keep it matte.”
In my own opinion, I like the look. It gives the cars a rather stealth appearance. Plus, these days a lot of items come with a matte finish like cell phones, lap tops, etc. So why not cars? Bling and shine are no longer a must in luxury and if companies want to begin to distinguish their products from the competition they need to know the wants and thoughts of the new generation.
